Designer Rob Gilad is fascinated with deconstructing ordinary objects, and describes his work as sitting “on the fat, delicious line between the abstract and the functional.” His Porcelain Platters (2005) walk that line, placing classic platters on contemporary stands, using the modern to emphasize the past. Use them as serving dishes, fruit bowls or pedestals that ask the question: “Does the plate itself become the object that is being adored because it’s on a pedestal?” All three platters can be stacked on top of each other. Approaching design from a philosophical angle, Gilad’s work questions the perception of everyday objects. He started his design studio, Designfenzider, in 2001.
