Small spoon for a mayonnaise jar

Design: Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

Production: Walter Thompson (Kraft), Alessi

1962, 1996

A plastic spoon whose form exactly fitted the inside profile of the mayonnaise jar, so it would clean out the mouth and bottom as well as the rest.

The handle is flat but a lunette in relief (on the back) gives the thumb a firm grip on a usually slipping object. The spoon, 20 cm long, is in polymethilmethacrylate. A plaster cast of the inside of a smooth standard jar for its design. The tip has the same radius of curvature as the jar, the middle section is flat to scrape out the cylindrical wall, and the top of the spoon has the same curve as the join between the cylinder and the neck of the jar.

Designed for Kraft as part of a promotion an advertisement created by the Walter Thompson advertising agency was originally printed on the flattened handle. It is now produced in a range of colours by Alessi. from SLEEK
