In between long campaigns of violence, pillaging, cursing, and other socially unacceptable forms of behavior, pirates had a lot of "down time." And since they were at sea, there were very few activities which could relieve their ennui. Some whittled new legs for their friends, others styled their facial and/or chest hair, while still others worked on cabaret acts. After a while, though, even those diversions became tedious.
